7 | how it works

In nearly every household exist small, often unaware collections of everyday things without certain meaning, e.g., twisted safety pins, broken wristwatches or old useless pencils...

That these these things live like in a parallel world their own life, not visible for us, shows the interactive film installation “not nothing.” A big wooden box with an adjustable lid and an integrated peephole allow to the user an insight into the life of these things.

In each case five select objects form a group and can be taken in hand individually or up to fifth and be laid in the box. Now the user can watch them and their goings-on. Because the objects influence themselves together, new stories arise with every new arrangement of the things.

An exact lab scales built-in in the ground determine the weight of the objects and her combinations. The picture of a small TFT monitor is diverted by a hinged mirror and by the peephole in the lid visible for the user. He guess to see the objects he put before. 62 short animation films with specially composed sound show the pretended interplay.

“Not nothing.” is a party of the banalities of our everyday life. A work about the small things on the edge of the visible. To bring them out , to revive them, to move them again in our field of vision and even if only for a short time, this was my aim.

The box was exhibited in lili design price, January 2005 (Berlin),  itXnetz-berlin, september 2005 and at the exhibition "bodegon espejo y naranja", october 2008 (bogotá)
